You teach yourself at the Math Empo. Easy "A".

Deborah Bost-Smith has the easiest job in the world. She teaches an online course. I'd say she works approximately 2 hours a week and gets paid a salary.....that's rediculous. MATH 1525 and 1526 were very easy, but Deborah just may be Satan. She sucks at giving help (I never asked for any, but on several occasions she would show up to answer questions for those at my computer "cluster", and she was always short and sarcastic). Well, I'm done with the empo, done with 1525 and 1526, so I only have one more thing to say.....SUCK IT DEBORAH

Yes, I don't think the arrangement with the math emporium is ideal for most students, however I hardly think Deborah Smith is to blame for that. I was really surprised when I saw her #1 on the worst rated list!

If you go to the math emporium just to take tests and never ask for help maybe you will think she is an awful teacher, however you will have never met her. Personally, I went there once a week the day my quiz was due to study, and I spent the whole day there. Inevitably I did have to ask a lot of questions and it was always a pleasure to speak with Ms. Smith. She was incredibly helpful and explained the material very clearly and made it easy for me to understand and had no problems taking her time and showing me how to solve a problem step-by-step. Way more helpful than some of the students answering questions there and I would often go out of my way to speak with Ms. Smith. Her help sessions were not convenient with my schedule but I'm sure they also are very helpful.

So while I understand low ratings of the math emporium system I don't understand why people let that reflect on Ms. Smith. She's a great teacher and I definitely recommend taking the time to meet her and give her an opportunity to help you, she wants to see her students do well!

If there was any way to give a score lower than 1, I would do it.

The emporium is the worst place invented. I pay tuition and get that? It's a joke. Where's my classroom and real teacher?

The quizzes for me were never the same as questions I got on the practice quizzes, which are supposedly from the same pool. I did get lucky on the final and got an amazing batch of questions, but that is no way to have a test that has so much variation. Overall, this is the worst class I have ever taken. I chose to take the equivalent to Math 1526 (The next course) over the summer at a community college so I could have a teacher.

I paid out of state tuition for this. What a joke.

Ms. Smith is a great math teacher. She provides help sessions once a week where you can bring the problems from the practice quizzes and she will do them out for you on the overhead. This is helpful for lessons where the quiz question bank is small because she will do all of the problems that will be on the quiz. I took MATH 1525 in Fall 2008. I went over to the empo two to three times a week and I got an A in the class. Ms Smith spends many hours at the empo to help students at the computers. She is very nice and helpful and willing to answer questions. The practice quiz questions will be on the quiz, the quiz questions will be on the test and the test questions will be on the final exam.

Everyone seems to hate this course, but it's not Mrs. Smith's fault. It's the fact that the Empo situation is horrible.

I saw Mrs. Smith a few times, and she was helpful and friendly. If you put the time into the class you should get at least a "B" in the class.

You'll see the same type, and sometimes the exact same questions on the quizzes and tests that you saw on the practice quizzes, so make sure you do plenty of them.

I took 1525 in the spring and 1526 in the fall. Over the summer the math dept changed its policies about using Excel on exams. If you know how to use Excel it'll help you solve the problems because the math will go much quicker, and some of the problems (like graphs) you'll have to use it to solve the problem.

I got an "A" in both 1525 and 1526, and I'm not really a math person. 1525 was an easier calc class than the one I took in high school, and 1526 doesn't go that far into integration, partial derivatives, or differential equations.

That being said, the Empo sucks, so have fun!

I agree with soooooostupid. This class is easy. The only reason people don't like her is because they're too lazy to get off the couch and go to their computer or to the empo to study for their quizes. As long as you actually do work, the class is easy. And you can't complain about not seeing her because she offers tutoring sessions and the empo offers help if you really need it. Basically, instead of whining about the empo get up and do your work.

EWWWWWWWWWWWWW Deb Smith, I despise you.

I'm a junior and I took the time to go back 2 years and rate you.

To this day, I am still busting my a** to bring my GPA up to where I'd like it - all from your class (1525 and 1526)!!!
