Unless you like doing under the desk work, and this guy would welcome that from the male students, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Ok, so you have to take the class, but don't get this guy, seriously. This class could be beneficial, but this self important ass should not be teaching it. The class starts out really easy, too easy, like an elementary school level art class and then morphs into jumping through a bunch of hoops that are not clearly defined. He puts on a front like he cares, but he does not. He does not grade anything fairly. For example, if you miss a small little part of one concept he marks you off for way more points than he should. Like if your punctuation is slightly off in one place but ok everywhere else he would give you less than half credit. He assigns arbitrary grades that go out to fourths of a point. And, throughout the course there is no way to actually know where you stand. He doesn't use blackboard or return e-mails either, which is always convenient! But it's a class about how to write e-mails? He does not practice what he preaches, at all. If you get stuck with him, seriously drop it. DEFINITELY THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE HAD AT VIRGINIA TECH. I cannot believe that Virginia Tech employs this man, he is a complete joke. I will say that I was utterly shocked by the final grade that I received, it really came out of nowhere and was definitely not what I earned.

I love to read and write but was definitely disliked this technical writing course. He is generally unfair in grading of assignments, rushes through topics, and picks on students. If you can take the course with someone else or online then do it. I did all of the assignments for the class and still got a C. (I got a 5 in AP english and an A+ on every other paper I've ever written). A lot of time is spent in class taking notes from the very dull and heavy technical writing text book. Additionally, There are sections where you have to make presentations in front of the class and he points out to everyone when you say "uh" or "um." I found this to be a cruel and embarassing teaching technique. The good aspects of the class are that you write a resume and cover letter which could be useful. Additionally, there were a lot of nice folks in my class that I was able to get to know. However, if you really want to improve your writing or at least get a decent grade without an excess of work (this course isn't even in major for 98% of the people taking it) then don't take it with Carl Bean.

This professor was terrible. Technical writing was a requirement for civil engineering, but my advice to you is to get a different prof. I´m thankful that he didn´t fail me, but I know that I am a great writer and should have received a much higher grade. However, since I am a medical student this class nor my undergraduate degree really matters to me at all. He´s very anal and will be biased during grading if he doesn´t like you.
If I were a psychiatrist I would prescribe him some xanax with zoloft or prozac alongside behavior modification therapy.

The beginning of our first class, Bean said "if you don't like the way I teach, leave." I think I should have taken his advice much sooner than I did. I almost failed a creative writing class because of this teacher. He spent whole classes working on writing the first sentence to a story. All of his formulas and theories on writing, I really could have done without. It was all nonsensical. He contradicted himself all the time! I even had to go to the writing center for help with an assignment which he still failed me for. I don't know why he disliked me so much. He wouldn't even say on my papers why I was failing. And if he did it was crazy little things like, I don't like this character or use a different font. I failed an assignment for writing "too much" so I went back and rewrote it and I swear he wrote at the bottom of my paper that he wanted more. And I still failed! By the time I dropped the class, there were only ten students left. And I wished them luck- cause I was just fed up with that teacher.

The way he conducts himself, it looks like he really cares about teaching the students. But that is so wrong once you're in the class and learn more about him. He talks of standards which he doesn't follow any. He says one thing yet he doesn't do it. He says that the class is an upper level class yet we barely do anything. We spend weeks and weeks on a simple project, and he lets us out early many many times, and cancels class whenever it is convient to him. You do much more 1000 level class than in this class. We didn't even do any work first week of class, but in 1000 level classes, we get to work on day 1. People in class complain that we don't do much of anything, yet he is oblivious to it and pretends that the class is some grand, rigorous class, which is clearly wrong. He passes his opinions about people and different subjects that are many times unrelated, yet he is clearly wrong. And he says that he has written books so he is right. He is so arrogant and doesn't know what he is talking about many times. The way he argues and humiliated me because I didnt' agree with him is so twisted. He only sees what he wants to see and rips you apart if you try to point out that he is wrong. No one is allowed to question him. I have friends that have suffered the wrath of this arrogant teacher like me.

At first you will think that you are in an art class. The first few weeks all you seem to do it draw pictures and right about them. He will tell you of more drawings you will be doing later on too. Then, all of a sudden it will make perfect sense. All of the things that seem mind numbing and useless will fall into place. Make the effort to do the work, have fun with your classmates and respect Bean and the class will be easy.

Carl has very definate ideas on what makes good writing and isn´t going to mince words when he tells you. Some creative writing teachers are a bit wishy washy and will let anything slide, but Carl strongly believes in writing as a "social act," and if your piece is so personal or symbolic that no one can understand he will not hesitate to tell you to tone it down. Sometimes I agreed with his advice, sometimes I didn´t. Sticking by my guns resulted in a slightly lower grade, but not so low that I regretted my decision. Carl himself will tell you how subjective editors can be - the same goes for him. This class involves a lot of workshopping. This is great if you get a good reader, but unhelpful if you don´t. Carl himself will do a little marking on your papers, but most of his comments are more general. Stories are sent out to literary magazines, and I found this to be the most helpful part of class. Carl thoroughly explained the technicalities of formatting, mailings, and rejections.

This class is extremely boring and you always have some tedious assignment to do such as creating a website and getting into your "red" and "blue" groups and what not. The only good thing about this class was that you worked on resumes and letters of application which of course are important. You have a bunch of stupid assignments throughout the year, some stupid quizzes that arent worth anything. You do oral presentations on the boring chapters in the book and he takes notice if you are absent so you should go to class. You have a common assignment to do at the end of the semester which isnt bad because you can base it off of another paper you are writing or wrote that deals with your major. Its not a hard class, but its boring, extremely boring.

While I have to admit that Carl gets a ´5´ for most of the "rate by number" questions, if you´re looking for a creative writing class that will let you write what you want and give you positive feedback, don´t take this one. He´s a nice guy but he doesn´t let you write your own stories. You have to write what genre of story he wants you to write and when you hand in your first draft, he will tell you how the story should have happened in his mind, and if you rewrite it his way you get a good grade on the revision, but if you do what I did and refuse to let someone else tell you how to write your story and you take his suggestions to improve the syntax and general setup, but keep the basic story the same, you get maybe a few extra points on the revision and a reprimand for not doing it his way. He told me "You´re a very good writer, and you have a lot of potential, but you won´t be able to reach that potential until you start writing stories the way they´re supposed to be written." If you don´t mind being told what to write and how to write it you´ll be fine; but if you actually consider yourself to be a writer and arne´t willing to let someone else write your stories for you, find a different teacher for this class.
