I was excited and a little scared to take a creative writing fiction course, but Carl Bean quickly made both the fear and excitement go away. My friends started referring to this class as my "technical creative writing class." If I wrote exactly what he wanted, I got a good grade. If I didnīt, it was looked down upon as "not quite what he was looking for" and only 12/15 points. Quite literally, he told me how he thought my story should have ended, I wrote it all out into my story, and I got full credit. Also, you never expected to receive full credit on your final draft, only on your revision, because that was when you learned exactly what he wanted. This professor in no way helped my writing or my confidence as a writer. I would not recommend Carl Bean unless you want a very superficial and rigid creative writing class.

Carl Bean is not a teacher that you want if you want to know what you are doing. He does not explain what he wants in a way that everyone can understand it. He will explain and give you a assignment and then the next day he will start all over explaining and tell you a whole different story saying he wants something completely different. By the time the assignment is due everyone in the class will be completely lost on what the assignment is supposed to be on. Donīt bother asking him about it cause he will just tell you to ask your peers who are just as lost as you. All assignments have drafts that are turned in. You think draft you think he will give it back and tell you major things that are wrong with the paper. WRONG! You turn in the draft the class before the final and all the help you get on the draft is from your classmates that donīt know what exactly he wants. I would not recommand taking Carl Bean for Technical Writing if you donīt like knowing exactly what needs to be done.

Carl Bean is the worst professor to take for Creative Writing: Fiction. I didnīt expect Creative Writing to be a joke, but I certainly did not expect it to be THIS difficult and my hardest class of the semester. And it was difficult in the stupidest ways. He would never excuse you for missing class, even if you were sick and had a doctorīs note. He was always like "move on from missing one day". But in the end it really hurt my grade. And he said that during the last days of class he will offer extra credit, he only gave one opportunity and that barely helped at all. And when he gave us our stories back to revise, all he wrote was chicken scratch basically, and when we revised them, he only added about .75 points. If you must take Creative Writing: Fiction, take it with Lee Norris, someone who will make the class enjoyable and will enable you to get a good grade. AVOID Bean at all costs!!!

Carl has extreme difficulty in explaining what he wants from you for an assignment. It became a running joke this semester that we wonīt know what to do until he has graded the rough draft and you get a chance to revise. This semester was an exercise in frustration. I do NOT recommend you take Carl Bean for Technical Writing unless you want to spend the entire semester being pissed off.

I have to say that Carl is the worst teacher I have ever had during my three years here. He is extremely anal about the way he runs his class, almost to the point of ridiculousness. Additionally, he lacks some current knowledge about several parts of his curriculum, especially webpage design. Often other students will correct him. Carl also fails to explain assignments. This is a typical process for an assignment in his class: he tells you the assignment with little to no explanation, has you bring in two copies of the draft next class period, your peers who also know nothing evaluate your drafts, you turn one in next class period, you get the draft back with TONS of errors and little explanation about what his sketchy red marks mean, and then you evaluate it. His process is frustrating. I would DEFINITELY recommend a different teacher or taking the online course

Carl is a great guy. Heīs friendly and a lot of fun to spend an hour with. I usually left his class with a smile on my face. He uses a lot of group activities and had us read our writing aloud a lot, which was hard at first, but it became fun. The only part of the class that I had a problem with was Carlīs use of small groups to "learn" the critical theories for our literary analysis papers. I had never seen these theories in high school, and I really needed some help understanding how to apply them. But Carl refused to teach them and told us that we had to teach eachother. Needless to say, I didnīt learn much about them.

I had a fairly difficult teacher for my Intro. to Creative Writing class, so I was dreading 3704. Carl Bean turned my dread into delight. Carl (he insists that you go on a first name basis) is a great teacher. Heīs serious when the situation calls for it, and lighthearted the rest of the time. He encourages all sorts of writing, but be warned, youīll definitely have to share with the class, so be prepared. All in all, if you like a classroom environment that is very discussion-oriented and lighthearted, Carl is your man.

Carl Bean is an enigma. Many times, especially when work is concerned, he will come across as a strict and somewhat anal teacher (Technical Writing is a pretty anal class), but itīs almost like a facade. Most of the time he acts very jokingly. He would crack jokes about latecomers, pretend to lose papers, and occasionally just throw random bits of paper into the ceiling fan just for fun. One time he even got up on his desk and started dancing. The class becomes very friendly and light-hearted as a result, and the oral presentations he makes you do become that much easier. Even with his dual personality, it was a fun class and I would definitely recommend him for ENGL 3764.
