Dr. Gillman is an excellent professor who really tries to bring out the best in her students. Her class is reading and discussion intensive, so if you are a shy person, this class is not for you. You can only miss 2 lectures without dropping a letter grade, but I enjoyed them so much that I didn't want to miss them. If you go to class, pay attention, and do the readings, you will do well.

Dr. Gillman is incredible- she was an amazing teacher and changed my life. I saw students struggle in the class who were obviously very stubborn/close-minded. If you just put some interest in your work you will thrive and learn a lot in that class. She has a lot to teach...I reccommend Race, Class, and Gender to anyone...I'd love to take more classes with her. There is a lot of reading but I found (and many others in the class) it all really interesting.

Dr. Gillman gets bad evaluations because students expect the classes they take at Virginia Tech to be easy. Gillman expects each student to take responsibility for their own learning and wants the very best from each student.
She is one of the best teachers I have had at Virginia Tech and I recommend her to anyone who craves a challenge and wants to change how they think about themselves and society.
She does not give you anything to read or write that will waste your time. Her subjects are interesting and will change your view of the world.
I do not think she plays favorites in the class because I felt as if I was one of her favorites and when I did not do my best on a assigment there was no halo effect. I recieved and A in Race, Class, and Gender and a A- in Global Feminisms.

Prof. Gillman is pretty intense. I took this class as a Sophomore, and the Seniors in the class complained that the workload was way beyond what a 2000 level class should be. She definitely plays favorites in grading. But if you need this class for your minor or major, you´ll get through it. There was a lot of reading, and a group ´formal presentation´ where you are required to dress as if it were a job interview. All in all I complained a lot about this class while I was in it, but looking back it wasn´t really that bad, it all depends on what your other classes are like, because Dr. G does seem to think her class is the only one you are taking! There is no final, but just a pretty easy powerpoint presentation.

No.

After advising with her in the IDST office, and having her for this online class entitled "Empowerment for Social Change," I can tell you that she is just as eWorthless as she is worthless.

I'd be interested to know how many people dropped her online class after the first week; no one could even figure out how to decypher the syllabus, much less actually accomplish what it was she was asking for after they did decypher it.

She even PLANS on that happening by putting a due date in the syllabus for the first assignment and then noting "there will be a 1 week grace period on this assignment since everyone usually can't [figure my horse-crap-non-sense out]"

I think when she planned this class she just sat down in front of a computer screen and thought "Alright, if I had a classroom full of elite super-brains, this is how I would have the class run."

And of course... it didn't go that way. The work load for that online course was 3 times any single in-class course I have taken. The point of an online course is to be able to pace yourself at your own time, of which she leaves you none of.

Unfortunately, to my knoweldge, she is the only psyco-systematic Nazi that teaches this required course within the IDST department, so uh... God Speed....

I took the writing intensive requirement for IDST majors with Laura Gillman online in the summer of 2004. I will never take another online course with this woman again, and I would recommend the same to anyone. Not only was the class started in a poor manner (Her idea of giving students time to get a head start on the class was to post all the readings on Blackboard two days before the class began - and there were a lot of them), she will not give good feedback until it´s basically too late to do anything about what you´ve turned in. She posted a number of readings that seemed very pretentious - such as common student reactions to a course like the one she was teaching, which basically listed every kind of reaction one could have as a bad one. Basically, she doesn´t grade in a understandable manner, some of the readings were incomplete and not corrected until the day an assignment was due, and she gave very little direction. Also, because this course was conducted online, it would normally be assumed to be flexible; however, Ms. Gillman was completely inflexible. Everything was due by 5:00 on the day it was due, and could not be turned in before that day. You had to have time to not only write and post your own opinions on topics, but you also had to post responses to other students´ responses, which could take a great deal of time, as many people did not post until the last minute. I would not recommend anyone taking one of Laura Gillman´s classes, and definitely not one that is online.

Of all of the teachers I have ever had at Virginia Tech, Laura Gillman was by far the worst. She is biased in her grading and expects every student to have complete knowledge of women´s studies before entering the class. She is not interested in hearing anyone elses opinions because only her opinion matters. My advice to anyone thinking of taking her class: DON´T!
