Avoid taking Professor James at all costs. She regularly assigns 4-5 different assignments each class. She also will email additional assignments on the weekend to be due the next class. She has no respect for a students time. I'm sure she would not appreciate a student making demands to know their grade on a weekend, it's unfair to think she can assign homework at the same time.

(I took this class in spring 04)
Dr. James tried to make her VB.NET programming class out to be more than it actually was. Nearly every homework assignment consisting of 2-4 mini projects was 2x more than necessary, however, she did not seem to have qualms about assigning grunt work for the sake of doing so. Contacting her via email (especially over the weekends) was a hardship as she normally did not get back with students until Monday afternoon. If you are a teacher assigning weekend homework assignments, you should be available to answer the questions your students have over the weekend!
It is essential to follow the criteria Dr. James wants for her projects. Add some logic and common sense and you are almost guaranteed an A. I have to give Dr. James credit; she manages to hammer the course material into the brains of reluctant BIT students (who are IT impaired and lazy by nature). If you´re a seasoned programmer, be prepared to get bored and disgruntled when the pointless assignments begin pouring in.
Her exams have changed from previous years and are atrociously easy. Most of the material she tests on come directly from the book, so keep up with your reading. It´s very easy to get behind in this class if you are not a good programmer, so beware. Dr. James does not fail half her class, but at least 1/4 of each period she teaches in a given semester will drop before the last day. If you are prepared to work, put up with BS, and learn a bit of programming, you will pass. Otherwise, find another teacher. I personally think Dr. James is hell-bent on showing the world what kind of hardass she can be.

Dr. James is knowledgeable, friendly, and respectul of her students' pursuits of a degree. Though I scored low overall in her class, she and I maintain a friendly relationship, and she has served me well as a mentor. She will not baby you as a student, but she will prepare you well for 4444. Her tests are difficult, but they force you to study and learn the material that you will need in future classes. She understands the difficulty of the class. She will often give a grade of 100 as long as your project works.
Don't let her catch your cell phone ringing in class though!
Come to class, read the book, go to her office hours, and you'll do fine.

Tabitha has received a really bad reputation on this site but from my own experience in one of her classes she seems to be a fair teacher. She will not baby-sit you so don’t take her if you want that. Contrary to what people think she is willing to help you and don’t be afraid to email her or go by her office hours. If you show up to class and put the amount of effort into her class that you should for a 3000 level business course you will be fine. Not to mention she is probably the most attractive professor in the BIT department

I would recommend that Tabitha James is avoided at all costs. Even with a background in programming, she made this class a living hell. From the first day of class, Dr. James was arrogant, rude, and not at all enthusiastic. She never used lecture constructively, but rather took most of the class time to ridicule the class or try and get people to stop talking.
The class consists of 4 homeworks, 4 tests, 3 "cases" (group projects), 2 not-so-mini-projects, and a final project that is worth 25% of the final grade. If Dr. James doesn't like your logic, she will take off SEVERAL points, as well as dock you for other things that haven't been made clear before you submit your homework.
I suggest taking this class with any other teacher possible.

I think most of the people who post to this site are afraid of a little work. She was tough. Her tests were short answer, and on very specific questions from the book. The projects were not that bad, but she is a very hard grader. However, if you go to her office hours, she will be more than happy to help you. Dr. James is very intelligent, and she´s not going to take slackers. But you´re in COLLEGE. It´s time to start working for your grades, instead of slcaking off. Dr. James will challenge you, but you can get an A, trust me.

It has been a few semesters since I had Professor James, but looking over these reviews I thought I should throw in my 2 cents.
Her class wasn´t hard, this is an introductory level class in VB and she did a good job of explaining everything. This class walks you through everything; you really don´t need any programming experience to do well in here.
James is picky about the programming assignments, but once you figure out how she likes things, it isn´t difficult to keep your grade up.
I read in other reviews that she just went over the examples in the book and that the student thought it was lame. I thought it was a great way of teaching the class, most students don´t read the chapters and sadly, most BIT students can´t program very well at all.
If you can´t program well, be prepared to work for an A, she moves fast if you aren´t used to programming, but you can definately do well with just a little work.

Good Luck to you is all I have to say if you get stuck in this class. Tabitha James will give you one very interesting semester aka prepare for worst. She is a really tough grader. I have had experience with 2 different programming languages so I would say I have a decent understanding of common programming practices. Coming to her class, forget anything you knew in the past. My last program I submitted, that ran correctly by the way , I received a 20 point deduction because she did not like my logic! It is ridiculous. This class requires lots of time and effort, but even if you do all that, it might not take you that far. She says go visit her in her office hours, but when you do, she really does not help you much at all. I do not think she realize how condescending she comes across to the students which is very discouraging. Keep your expectations low going into this class. VB is a great language to learn, but her class makes it not enjoyable.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but Dr. James isn´t a bad teacher and I can´t understand the scathing reviews. At first she does come off a bit on the “you lack discipline” side, but she’s cool after the class gets going. As someone said in an earlier review, you will be better prepared for the work in later classes if you have Dr. James. If you came to VT to get a free ride though, wait for another teacher. I wasn’t in class with the previous reviewers, but I don’t get it. She isn’t hard at all on the programs, but I would recommend showing up for class the day before exams, because you might miss something that’s a gimme. Also, don’t be late for class or miss more than 2 days. How hard is that? Please.......

Ok so I am very dissapointed by the reviews I have seen here. I think it is just the fact that some of these people thought that this class should be cake and instead she made them work for their grade. Oh no they finally found a business class that they had to work in. I actually found this class worth my time. I´ll have to admit that at first I thought this class was going to be horrible, but if you just do the work and you give her some respect shes not that bad. Everybody seemed to dislike her attitude, well if everybody in the class seemed to be an ass to you I don´t think you´d have the best attitude about teacher a class.
The class is consisted of many programs that should really only take 3 to 6 hours if you just pay attention in class. a mid term and a final which yes are hard but who cares... study, and a final project which takes up quite a bit of time, but will make you learn so much more.
I am glad I took this class with her because I feel I am much more prepared than the students who took 3444 with the other teachers in this school, from the stories I´ve heard at least. But if you want an easy way out of VB than don´t take her, it will be your loss though.
