Bob Hicok seems like a very personable instructor. Even though he looks a little strange, like most of the other English department people, he sounds like a sane person when he talks. The problem is, when he talks he is duplicitous, which for you freshmen means he can't be trusted. I know for a fact that he has taken some of my assignments and turned them into the VT police because I got questioned by them about them. He still denied it. But he was the only one who got them. I can see if it's campus policy, especially after the shooting, but at least tell the truth about it.
Bob Hicok is good at making writing seem approachable. But his own poetry is terrible. It doesn't have the slightest bit of profundity to it, just the same lame crap. These English teachers think writing is just polish. Polish it and smooth it out, and even when there's nothing behind it, it'll be good to them. Bob Hicok apparently likes little things you can smirk at, not things that change your life. Take the class if you have to, but otherwise stay away.

To me, he seems like an overly artsy person, basically a hippie who really doesn't care that much about teaching, and does it to pass the time. That's all you need to know in order to take his class. He doesn't care if you come out a better writer or not. He doesn't care if you like him or not. When he passed out teacher evaluations he said 'Sorry you guys have to do these, I don't care about them.' If you talk a lot in his class and write the poems, you'll do well. If you take notes on what he says about people's poems, and then say the exact same thing the next time that same person writes a poem, you'll do well. Oh and if you're a strict Christian/religious person who has a problem with people who aren't married, don't take his class. He refers often to 'his mate' who is female, but who he never calls 'my wife.'

Ok all in all he's a nice guy but you absolutely have to talk in this class. When he talks about class participation he doesn't mean answering questions every once in a while- he means blabbing on and on in front of the whole class every single class. The more you blab the better. Sometimes the topics are akward, but you still have to blab if you want an A. I took him for creative writing and from what I've heard most of those teachers are hard. However you can be a horrible writter and get an A in his class as long as you blab alot. He mentioned on the first day that the grading of creative work is subjective. I understood that and had confidence in the quality of my writing. He should have said-however- that by subjective he meant he wasn't going to grade any of your papers and he was just going to evaluate your blabbing. You never get a paper back with a grade on it- and that really frustrated me because my papers were good. There is ABSOLUTELY no numeric grading system he makes known to students, and I doubt there is one at all. Its so subjective it merits a stronger word. This is not to say he's a bad teacher, it was pretty easy to see he's very creative and a brilliant writer. But unless you are completely comfortable discussing your feelings outloud about other people's work- don't take the class. You can write about anything in the class-even topics like abortion and you're expected to participate in discussions about it even though it makes alot of people uncomfortable. Not to mention I'm sure you're all familiar with those annoying people who talk too much. This allows them to take their annoyingness to a whole new level. Be prepared for them. Oh and also you sit in a circle everyday so you're all facing eachother when you're talking. There's little variation in the class style.
