The student a few responses below mine must have been one of the students sleeping and behaving rudely because Professor Lemons is a great professor. I also had a death in my immediate family, and he was accommodating and understanding. Once a week, he does a sponge activity where he picks random students to go up to the front of the class and answer questions. If they get it wrong, we have a quiz. The quizzes aren't worth that much toward your final grade and if you attend his classes, he is nice enough to provide a curve that he labels as, we'll think it's "mother fin Christmas" Lemons is great and his tests are pulled directly from information he has gone over. He is highly knowledgeable and is available to help you. He isn't rude, he is just real.

Dr. Lemons was very knowledgeable regarding statistics, although I didn't always agree with his teaching style. He had sponge activities about once a week where random students were called up in front of the class to answer questions and if they got the answer wrong the entire 500+ person class would have a quiz the next class. The quizzes were very difficult and based on very specific details said in lecture. He used the "F" word several times in our first day of class for no real reason at all, which made me instantly lose a lot of respect for him. He is definitely a hard professor, but if you go to class, he will curve your grade a substantial amount at the end of the semester.

Loved him. Tests came directly from powerpoints, he had ~30 minute powerpoints where he talked and explained EVERYTHING, and had about a zillion extra credit opportunities. I got a 40 on the final and still got an A on the test. He is very straightforward, extremely dedicated, and VERY organized. He was always very helpful, he used to help us if we called him at any time of the day.

Professor Lemons was great. As my last of 5 classes in a day last semester he always kept lively and I never had trouble staying awake or wanting to be there. He genuinely cared about the students and made sure that everyone understood anything. You could say he was rude to some students, but only the ones who slept through class or were disrespectful to him. If you didn't understand something during class he was easy to approach afterwards and was very willing to help. I loved this class and I wish I'd taken Stat 2004 with him so I'd have another class with Lemons. As it is I skipped 2004 and had no trouble passing 3604.

It's interesting to see all the varying posts for this teacher. I personally did not like him, or this class. I'm alright at math but this course was very difficult for me. It seemed that he taught us one way to do a problem in class then completely changed the terms and set up on the tests. The sponge activities are really dumb because if the person(s) messes up, the whole class can get "punished" by having to take a quiz. He can be really rude and will call you out if he thinks your sleeping or not paying attention. Unfortunately, I think he is the only teacher for this class otherwise I would suggest taking a different one.

I've been at VT since Fall 06, and signed up for this site in Apr 09 just to comment on this professor.

This man is the MOST disrespectful professor in college I have yet to encounter. He treats his class with 200 students as if everyone's still in middle school, and likes to point out how stupid people are. And if he doesn't like your class, heaven help you... fail a few sponge activities, and all students get punished. If one or two students commit an act of "academic dishonesty," he will immediately write off the class as a hopeless case and will no longer offer bonus opportunities, etc. that he offers to other classes.

He likes to say "you're all judged as a group," and yet we are graded individually... how does that work? One person screws up, we all get punished... I've never understood this logic.

On two occasions, during the "sponge activities," he bribed a student with money. Let me explain: his favorite sponge activity was one where he would pick 6 to 12 students, ask them questions, and if the student got the question wrong, a red chip would be placed in a bag, in which there were already a certain number of green chips. He would then choose a student to pick 1 to 3 chips from the bag, which would determine if we had a quiz next class, bonus points, class cancellation, etc. He would sometimes bribe the student who was picking from the bag with money, saying that they would be exempt from the quiz and get whatever money/gift certificate he was offering if they would forfeit the opportunity to pick from the bag, leaving the rest of the class to take the quiz. How is this an honest or fair way of teaching a class?

He treats the course (intro stat) as if it is the most important thing you will ever take in college. He treats his TAs like crap, the assistant running the projector like crap, his students like crap... he was also beyond unaccommodating with respect to a makeup test that I needed to take when I had a death in my immediate family.

His teaching style is mediocre at best... like a person said before me, he basically wants you to memorize examples from his slides. He didn't teach the way I learn, that's for sure. Also, don't believe the bullcrap about the class being easy, and his claim that he does everything he can to help his students get a good grade and move on... he totally fights every one of his students every step of the way.

Sorry for how disjointed and choppy this review was, but I didn't have much time to write this, and I wanted to say as much as possible. And still, I swear, I could go on for days. The amount of stress and anguish this man has caused me this semester is much more than is necessary for a stupid intro stat course. I used to be in Engineering, so I know a thing or two about difficult classes. There was just no logical reason for this, at all.

I normally don't comment on this site, but I strongly disagreed with the student below me.
Professor Lemons is an EXTREMELY fair professor AS LONG AS YOUR CLASS PUTS IN THE EFFORT. His sponge activities (which are explained below) are his way of making sure the class is studying and coming to class. He likes to choose members of the Corps, athletes, and sorority/faternity members because they are the "leaders" of the school. He ALWAYS listened to what students had to say or any questions they had. I stayed after class once to ask a question about one of the homework problems and he was very helpful. One note of advice: DO NOT EVER fall asleep in his class! I don't think that's too much of him to ask. The main reason I really enjoyed this class was because even though there were 200+ students enrolled, I felt as though I was sitting in a room of 20 other people. I really enjoyed this class and Prof. Lemons..he's just funny. "Chilllin.." "Do you know what I'm saying?" Don't let comments like the one below stop you from taking his class!

Professor Lemons is an amazing professor if you only want to learn the material. He explains it very well and gives tons of examples. However, he is very disrespectful, late, rude, and unprofessional. He comes to class late and only apologized one time, but then if someone wants to make an announcement before class he states "Make it quick. I start at 10:10". He wears shirts from Abercrombie and Fitch with inappropriate phrases on them and sometimes wears do-rags as well. He even told a student in the Corps that he would "call and get his rank stripped" because he was talking in class. Another student went home for a funeral and when she came back he said "I am not responsible for giving you the material. You're the one that decided to go home". If you only want to learn the material and get a good grade, take this class. But if you want to be respected and like your professor and feel like you can talk to him, don't take his class.

Professor Lemons was an excellent teacher! I am happy that I had him and not a ta! I heard that this course is tough but Professor Lemons was nice to us all of the time. I will use him as a reference when I graduate.
